Hello! I recently purchased a 90' zephyr 550 from a co-worker. Needs some tlc but it should make for a fun lil commuter. It shares the garage with my other Kawasaki, a 99' zrx1100 that's been modified slightly.

the zephyr...

and the zrx...

Nice Bike! What's the story with the seat, it looks great. Is that just a new cover or new foam too? Was it done locally or shipped out? (if you know).
Also, nice 1100 - turbo and intercooled on an 1100 - that must be quick. Did you do that yourself?

And of coarse - Welcome!!!

I purchased the zephyr from a co-worker. I'm certain he had the seat recovered by another co-worker who does upholstery work on the side.
The turbo system on the zrx was done by a friend up in the Seattle area. The motor is actually from a Kawasaki ZZR1200 topped with a zrx1200 head(sidedraft). The motor was bored 2mm over (1224cc) with low compression turbo pistons and the crankshaft was lightened 5lbs.. The hazard button is wired to work as a low/high boost button. Low boost is 10psi and high boost is 15psi. Dyno results were: low boost- 196hp and 142 ft. lbs. High boost-241hp and 177ft. lbs.

OMFG!
And you ride that without ending up flat on you back how? I would not have a license for long with a bike like that - but it would be fun for a while!

Dangman. :) That's a heck of a piece, that Z-Rex. :D Do you find the six-pots on the front to be too much brake? I've typically heard people find them to be a little bit too sensitive for most street riders.

If you ditch the stock exhaust for something aftermatket on the Zeph, you'll shave off quite a few pounds and really wake the bike up a bit, with the addition of a good jet kit being recommended. Welcome to the forum, and hope you enjoy your stay. :D

The brakes on the rex aren't to sensative. I wouldn't mind if they were a touch more powerful but I'm not complaining.

Any recomendations on a pipe? What kind of #'s does your 615 put out?

I guess the Rex is heavy enough that the six-pots are nto too much for it. :D

A pipe for the 550, or for the ZRX? I'll assume the 550 for now. Unfortunately the only people who make a pipe that's worth a damn any more that you can easily get in America is the Kerker, and it's a chunk of change. It's definitely a good pipe, though. You can also fairly easily adapt a twin-shock GPz Bassani for the Zephyr, like I have, but the trick there is in fnding one. It's an incredible pipe. I'm looking forward to getting my spigots from the machine shop (soon, hopefully!) so I can run it properly and get some jetting dialed in. It definitely is making more power than my Supertrapp ever dreamed of, and it sounds absolutely incredible, very much like a literbike with a big basso profundo rumble at idle. :D :D

Last numbers I got from the dyno with my 615 were the equivalent of slightly over 71 bhp on a Dynojet dyno. Not too shabby for a two-valve air-cooled motor right in the 600 class. Curves!

Well, the Zephyr is a lil closer to you now azraphale. My good friend and new member Redcliff now has the bike. He will be fixing it up for his lovely wife to ride.

Wow, it's strange to see a Zephyr with white wheels and a black engine, forks and swingarm, but it does look good. A just a leetle tiny bit like the Z-Rex, haha. :)

Did you do anything else besides the aftermarket shocks, brake lines and pods? Paintwork aside, of course!

Had a freind of mine go thru the engine. Pretty much all brand new.

I was meaning in terms of mods... I gather the engine was rebuilt to stock configuration?

Regardless, it's sure looking nice, and I'd love to see some photos of the two bikes together after you are done!

Man, that looks good! :D Thanks for sharing. I'll bet you will appreciate the brake caliper mount brackets once they are ready --- you will get to move up to four-pot Nissins on the Zephyr.

These will allow you to use aftermarket rotors and have 4-pot GSX-R calipers bolt right up to the Zephyr 550 fork legs. Still trying to scrape together the cash to have them made in metal for fitting checks.
