Hey all, '91 Zephyr 550 owner here from Brisbane in Australia. Picked it up in 2000 after having ridden a CB250/GSX250 for a while. Being a tightfisted uni student for most of the time since, I slowly but steadily let it deteriorate until early this year when it finally decided it had had enough d'oh!. I'm currently riding a Buell XB12R, but i'm looking at resurrecting the Zephyr soon, now that I have a bit more time/money to spend on it.

Welcome! :D

Sadly, no motorcycle is really CHEAP to bring nicely back to life, although if you do your own work it can be well within the realm of reason. The good news is that most of the parts you'd want to replace on a Zephyr 550 are still readily available, and you can get by without spending too terribly much most of the time. I generally have a host of used parts in various conditions, priced accordingly, and I am sure an increasing number of our increasing membership probably have some to offer as well. :)

The 550 mill is pretty rugged, and was actually the identical bottom end to the one used in the GPX600, or Ninja 600R as it was called in the States. In fact, if you don't mind the thermostat housing hanging out in the breeze, you can mock up some mounts for the radiator and put a GPX motor right into a Zephyr 550.

Looking forward to helping you get your old pride and joy shipshape again. :)

Ok, I joined up a while ago, and then promptly stalled with the work on the zephyr... So once again I'm planning on starting the resurrection, so thought I would reintroduce myself... Info still basically the same as my original post, it's just two years down the track...

Progress to this point... ~zero... Dunno!

Keep ya posted!

Welcome back!

Feel free to post tech questions or what have you as the rebuild process goes on. I knnow how you feel about no progress being made... I am sad to say my own Zephyr 550 has been in mothballs for over a year now, waiting for the caliper brackets and some other odds and ends before it is roadworthy again. Better late than never, though!
