I am building a GPZ550 to race in the Mediumweight Super Vintage class in the AHRMA. Rules state you can have 41mm forks and 3.5 and 4.5 17" wheels. Front disc are floating which they say we can use. So I have wheels and forks coming from SV650's which are just what the doctor ordered. They also say 2 piston calipers only. Well the early SV's have just that too. I will keep everybody informed how hard or how easy this is going to be. The DL650 has the upper triple clamp that has handlebar mounts because they say no clip ons.
Race Tech has stuff to make the forks work better but that is down the road a bit. First things first. Once all the stuff is in front of me I will see if I need the SV's real caliper and mount. I am looking for the right rear shock right now.
I will keep you updated on everything.

I have seen a number of riders using the 550 Zephyr front assembly, which has a 17 inch wheel with double discs and twin piston calipers. The tubes are decent size and I guess the rim is adequate for the need. That's how I recognized them on a couple of KZ650 and a GPz550 bikes at Mid Ohio - the rim spoke design. The rim's a bit narrow, but apparently functional. the forks are significantly larger OD. Check them out.

1990 Kawasaki Zephyr 550 mostly stock - if I wanted faster I'd have bought faster 1995 Kawasaki KLX650 with a big bore Vulcan piston 678cc, a pipe, and Dial-A-Jet 1978 Yamaha SR500 eventually to be a 60's style flattrack look street tracker 1967or so Bultaco M27 Sherpa T - first bike I bought, 1971.
