How loose can my valve clearance be on my 550? I have two valves that are .001 out of the top limit, is it worth going through the hassle of reshimming?

A noisy valve is a happy valve. Tight is not good. 0.10mm-.20mm intake 0.15mm-.25mm exhaust Cold engine.

Thanks for the notes. I have the specs but was just questioning my own "wisdom" on the subject... I do not see having an exhaust and an intake valve .001" too loose as being critical. I was asking around to see what some others might think. The reason: cams have to be removed to do the adjustment - lots of work for less than half a human hair of clearance to the "safe" side, aka loose. At this point after talking with a few mechanics, one for whom I have total respect, I buttoned up the engine without the adjustment.

Every time I've wanted to get a little closer to the middle of the tolerance, it goes too far with one up shim change, so I just leave it when it's within specs. Getting good at valve shim replacement, but not worth the hassle.

If you have to go one direction away from where you want to be, loose is better, especially on an exhaust valve. While this will tend to cost you some top-end power due to less time open, you'll run no risk of burning a valve or having one overheat and literally lose its head.

Good to see you're back. I PMed you on the cam chain tensioner. I may have one more that I can finish quick. I need to make more of them. They also fit the KLX, with a different adjuster bolt. If you're doing a different application let me know what the needed length of extension inside the block to hit the cam chain tensioner shoe is and I can get the right length. The Zephyr requires a longer bolt than the KLX. I'm also planning on doing 750 tensioners too if I can.
By the way is the shock guy you told me about for redoing the stock shocks still doing it? I'm considering doing the shocks if some more tensioners sell... pays for my habits to an extent.

I was away for a few weeks, sorry about that. I got the emails; I have a financial squeeze happening suddenly, so don't save stock for me right this minute. I'll make it happen soon, though, no worries. Your idea of a PayPal bill for me works fine on this end. AFAIK, the shock guy is still doing his magic, but is not working with a dealership in Livermore. http://www.aftershocks-suspension.com/pages/home.htm
